Setting Accomplishable Goals

I asked my dad to write a blog post for us on Goals. Here is what he said:

You out there, being all you can be and living a life worthy of God's calling is an undaunting task. So let's keep our goals in a realistic and healthy perspective, not what some would preach as what we should or could do which means cut out "the crap" .
First of all, begin with simple goals and plan to build upon them, like you would walk up steps, a hill or a tree. The success of your first step will be essential to build your confidence. For example, on Mondays in January, I will write down my assignments I need to complete for this week.

Second, make your goal manageable, like beginning where you at now and build on top of what you are doing. Like with the above example, if you never write down your assignments or never have made a "to do" list, the above goal could be what you should do, not what you can do. So make it simplier like, This month I will ask ______ (someone who can help you) to help me write out an assignment list for one week.

Third, identify what could be a barrier (something that gets in your way) to you accomplishing your goal. Could being distracted by video games, a friend who likes to talk or forgetfulness? Then find out how you are going to overcome this barrier before it happens, because you know it will happen.

So write up a goal, based upon the above recommendations, being sure to answer how you are going to overcome any barriers.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your blog today! The older Mr Reed

Anonymous said...

i totally get whst drew is saying and i kind of also have that problem

Unknown said...

ok mr reed
well i think a goal for bible should be logical, like Mr Reed Sr said, well i think that a good goal 4 bible class should be that we need 2 make more time for the journal and that we should take more time 2 think on it instead of just winging it so that we can get it over with
i also agree with Drew W.

Anonymous said...

For a goal i need to work on praying more like drew said. I have to pray more before i eat to remind myself that God helped me in order to eat a meal

Anonymous said...

i also think that goals help all of us in order to get threw life. If there aren't any goals then what will you achieve during your life?

Anonymous said...

One thing I need to work on is when I pray to actually mean it instead of doing it because it's what people do

Anonymous said...

one goal i need to work on is definately reading the bible more. i should read every day and enjoy it more.

Anonymous said...

i agree with drew may because not only do i need to read the bible more, but i also need to pray more. just like evrything with gods word, u should spend more time with it, instead of wordly things.

Anonymous said...

I AGREE W/ DREW W I RLLY NEED TO REED MI BIBLE MORE AND PRAY ALOT MORE

Anonymous said...

I also nedd to read the bible more but a barrier could b my frends. My neighbor is 1 of my best frends so sometimes its hard but i will hav to tell him to wat a little bit.

Anonymous said...

I agree with eli that god gives u evry meal so we should thank him for evry meal

Anonymous said...

a goal i have is to do better in school. i dont have the best grads right now. it's just hard to make that a priority

Anonymous said...

i agree with rickie

One goal i need to work on is reading my bible more, i almost never read my bible except when i am in school. I try to do it more at my house but i end up forgetting about it.

I agree with what drew warren said about how getting into a habbit takes a while, but yea me and him hav the same problem.

I have to work on stopping apathy work its way into my life. I feel like I need to be more energetic and passionate for Christ. I guess one "manageable" way of doing this is setting time out of my day to have a daily devotional with God and talk to him and then be silent and listen for God to speak to me. I think one of my main problems with prayer is that I'm just all talk and no listen.

Anonymous said...

I understand where Drew M. is coming from. We need to learn to depend on God in times of need and pray to him continuously.

Anonymous said...

One goal I need to work on is praying more often. Right now I am doing a read ur bible in a year thing and I am doing realy well with it. I only pray for about 3 min. a day. Thats 1 thing people take for granted. They dont realize God is always there and they forget to pray. I think I can go up to 5 min. a day, twice a day.
I want Andrew Kyle to help me because he is good at praying, well remembering to pray and he would be good to help me. GO ANDREW!!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Justin, we need to all have more heart felt prayers and actually pray

Chad T said...

one goal for me would be to read my bible more than just in Bible class
i also agree with nathaniel

I agree what drew said how we need to read the bible more than just in bible class or in church. I think a goal I am going to set for myself is to memorize a verse every week besides our memory verse and go beyond the little we read.I think it could be a good goal to accomplish because didnt we say our goal was to become closer to God.Well even if we just read a chapter or two a day that would become bigger as we go along because one small thing can turn into something big.

Anonymous said...

I agree w/ good ol' rickie
its hard since im from a public school and most of them have never even heard of John 3:16. friends r a barrier but u just have 2 either help them or act like they never evn heard of the Bible.

If we didnt have goals we wouldnt get anywhere in life because we wouldnt have anything to accomplish.

Anonymous said...

i think that i need 2 work on my grades. i have really crappy grades rite now, and i need 2 work on that. i also need 2 work on prayin like drew said.

Anonymous said...

i think i should pray more, and by more i mean more than the dear lord bless my meal and be with me as i sleep. there is nothing wrong with these but i dont think that this is what prayer is for.

also i have something i need to say, i have started my own little goal new years day to read the entire bable befor 2010. i did my research and if you read 5 chapters a day, you will read the bible in less than a year. i am in thee middle of dueteronomy and it really isnt that hardi hope u guys join in on this because i would like to say my entire bible class including myself, read the entire book in under a year. if u would like to talk u know where to find me.

Anonymous said...

i just looked at your guyses post and i am really impressed. Josh, its good to see that someone is on board with me, and both drews, i am glad that u guys have opened up and told what u need help with. drew warren, your new school hopefully hasnt put up barries as much as it has helped u get over them. and drew may, u were my first friend at the grade school and i hope that i can be here for your hard times. as well as everyone else, good job expressing yourself and i hope u accomplish these goals.

I need to work on prayer. Some of my prayers are ending up to be the same thing, day after day after day. Every day my prayers become less of a prayer and more of a chore. After all, if it's the same thing every time, I feel like I'm not talking to God. More of like myself.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Gleeson. I need to read the Bible and enjoy it.

Anonymous said...

i need to pray and actually put thought into my prayer adn not just say the same prayer every time some of the things i have difficullty with is public speaking that might be a problem when it comes to praying and as Mr. Reed said make possible goals do not start out with a long prayer start slowly and build up as you go along

Anonymous said...

i gree with drew warren i need to pray not only more affective but also more in general good pionts drew warren.............. hey guys

Anonymous said...

also a goal i have is to pray five times a day and get gradually more times and to jackson rodgers wonderfull and inspirational you did a good job keep up good work boys

Samuel W said...

One goal i Believe i need to increase upon is the simple fact of cutting down on time playing games watching television and such and put more into bible reading like start with 5 mins off tv and put those into bible reading. I think that i would increase it by 5 mins about every 3 or 4 weeks until i got an hour a week 3 times a week. one thing that could hinder this is i get sucked into t he game or show or a good show is coming up next, after a while i might be able to control better until i can go hours at a time reaing the bible. not only the would i increase but take another minute of prayer to pray AFTER finishing up my bible reading.

Samuel W said...

I agree with Drew Warren on that first post after Mr Reed and how people are not used to reading the bible or praying for answers to problems, including myself. Usually i think think things out then if i cant get a way i either get frustrated and quit ( if quitting is possible at the time) or contiue on , OR finally going to God , or just ask other people about it.

Anonymous said...

about the boys i mean MEN ............ hey guys hows it goin

Anonymous said...

one goal i need to work on is praying daily.i pra some but not enough. i probly pray 2 minutes a day before i eat. i will try to pray 5 minutes a day. some things that might stop me from praying is tv and sports.

Anonymous said...

A goal I would like to achieve is to pray more often. Mr. Reed said that he usually doesnt pray as much as he should. I would like to pray for at lease 2 minutes a day. I could start doing this by praying at least 2 times a day besides at meals. Some obstacles for me are videogames and television. So maybe I should put the remote down and pray just to thank god for what he has given me.

Anonymous said...

i agree with sam i. that i need to get btter grades

Anonymous said...

I agree with Drew W. The only times I read the bible are in class and when my parents ask me to. I should also start to read the books of the bible that I normally just skip.

Anonymous said...

Everybody needs goals, because if we didnt set gaols in life we wouldnt accomplish anything. And I believe I need to read the Bible more as well as pray more. Even though I pray alot, I need to go a little more in depth. Also us as Christians need to set better examples for those non believers. That is what really pleases God.

Anonymous said...

agoal i need to do is pray more cuz sumtimes i have trouble not prayin that much so i need to start prayin more a lil at a time.

Anonymous said...

What Drew said is exactly right. We shouldnt just read the Bible and pray, just because we are forced to.

Anonymous said...

i agree with drew about readin ur bible more

hey everyone srry i couldnt be at skool, strep throat..Well i got alot of goals but there not for like bible, they are mostly for football and track, like running faster ,but for bible class i think one of my goals should try and be nice to everyone, I mean like last year i heard alot of sexual jokes ande alot of teaseing..this year isnt as bad but there is still some and thats my goal, to not make bad jokes and be kind to everyone........... if we can do that chs could be a way better skool, also i really need to work on time with God, the only time i pray is before i eat...everyone has goals, but to reach them u have to start somewhere....

Anonymous said...

those are my goals.... but what r the class goals?? every team has to have a game plan or they wont go anywhere.....

Anonymous said...

i agree with drew w

Personnally, I would like to get in better shape than I am right now. It says in the Bible that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Imagine what a temple of the holy spirit would look like. Treat it that way.
Last year I had a workout regimine that I followed to the teeth everyday. As soon as I would get home I would run a mile then do exercises. I was in great shape and had nice muscles goin on.
Sadly, just like Mr.Reed's friend, I got burnt out and was drained of energy all the time so I had to stop. And as time came to pass now I have done nothing besides the requirement of P.E. and basketball last semester. I just am not fit anymore.
Now this may seem to be somewhat irrelevant compared to the status quo of everybody elses comments but I beg to differ. This is my 2 biggest goal.
My numero uno goal is to pray 10 mins a day compared to the approximate 45 secs right now. Well, good luck to all and have a happy Monday off

Anonymous said...

That is so cool Jackson. Read the Bible over the span of a year? I like it, who knows... maybe I'll try it...

Anonymous said...

i need to work on while i'm praying not just asking Him to give me stuff, but to actually talk to God. i've always prayed for my own personal gain than to actually talk to God.

Anonymous said...

i have a problem with the Bible like drew warren, but mine isn't reading it, it's comprehending it, using it in my life, and everything.

Anonymous said...

A goal that i want to achive is getting wiser. In proverbs, God tells us to get wisdom. He says,"Wisdom is Supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost you all you have, get understanding." The first goal I would like to set is memorizing 2 references of the Bible a week and do it THOUROUGHLY.

Anonymous said...

I agree with steven h. a lot of times i just pray to God when i need help, but i need to stay true to him always.

Anonymous said...

i think when we pray we get distracted easly because we are always doing something throught the day and when your praying we arnt doing anything so we get distracted by everything elce that we have done or are going to do because we sit there and get bord because sometimes it feals like we are talking to areselves and we start to think and daydream so a good goal for praying can be to pray for a minute or so then a wile later try again and do that for a week and try for longer until its more comfortbal for you

Anonymous said...

i agree with MC

Anonymous said...

one goal i need to work on is i need to think what would jesus do in some situations because i tend to do before i think. usually i just forget to think about it because i'm caught up in the conversation

Anonymous said...

i totally agree with austin. i'm not in the best of shape either. ever sine football season was over i just played basketball like twice a week when i played football four times a week. i'm not saying i'm in bad shape it's just that i could do better

the overall niew of setting goals at least to me means that you set it high and try your hardest to meet that that is why you set them high so that you meet them and if not then you get as close as you can and acheive a "high place on the totem pole". so just one goal that i need and want too work on is to stop reading things that do not neccisarily honor god with the topic / story line not anything really bad just things like witchcraft ect...
another goal i would like to set as well as achieve is to read the bible in a year wich i have nearly done but never truly achieved.

these goals are not to high but i can raise them as i go that is why i started higher tha some may and then when i meet that goal i feel that ive accomplished something abouve and beyond just a temp. term not a lifelong thing.

Anonymous said...

i agree with Jamie "Da Smart Alec" Briggs as he said i need to stop apathy in its trek to step into my spiritual life and my person /sports life.

Anonymous said...

i agree austin and iom not in the best shape of my life either not that im not in shape but ya our body is the temple for christ and if you need some1 to work out with you and help you be accountable im here:)

i nned to work on praying more...i only pray like 3 minutes a day and its all in one prayer

i need to read the bible mor.....it sumtimes frustrates me wen i realize how little i do...im gonna try

Anonymous said...

i like what people are saying about praying more and reading your Bible and i agree with it but not many of us are really going to do all that stuff cause ive said that a ton of times so my goal is to stay organized in school and turn in all my work on time once i do that i will start doing more wit prayer and the Bible.

Anonymous said...

i agree with justin that i need to really be thinking bout god wen i pray and not just sayinn stuff to look good

Anonymous said...

i agree with matt

Anonymous said...

some goals i need to work on is definetly just spending some time with God more. how i can do that i guess is by readiing my bible way more often then i do now. maybe i can start with a chapter a day and move on to maybe 20 chapters a week. and also what Mr. reed said about just waiting in silence and just waiting for God to speak to you like samuel did in the bible.

Anonymous said...

I don't want to just read my Bible in class, or with people, and I don't want it to be just another thing. I need to spend time in depth in my Bible and in depth in prayer, every day. Not just reading my Bible to make myself feel like I'm doing the right thing, but actually getting into it.

Anonymous said...

Briggsy(Da hotness) is completely right about the apathy thing. I need to let God speak to me more. But it's not only letting Him speak, it's listening, and knowing when it's Him who's talking. I have to eliminate all other voices in my head when I'm in prayer, and focus only on what God needs me to say.

Zach Lambert said...

i would like to pray more. ive seen lots and been through lots, and when i pray and mean it i feel something thats why i want to pray to grow closer to god.

i think what mr mr reed was totally right wen he said we need to cut the crap and do what god whants us to do mr reed u have a pretty cool dad he sounds like a good christian dude lol and i also think that a good goal for bible 7 and 8 men is to not look at wemon in a perverted kinda way but like u said we r going to slip so its good that i have u and all my friends to catch me and let me no that its wrong thanx
