From the Associated Press –
Hiam Shatir may look like your average pastor, but he’s not acting like one. In a nation filled with expensive mega-church buildings popping up, Hiam instead chose to sell his mega-church, Crestview Community Church, and attempt to live into what he says is the call to “be the church.” And although many doubt him, Hiam just knew it was the right move to make.
“We just felt it was the right thing to do,” said Hiam, a businessman turned pastor, from his converted basement where he now administrates the church. “We couldn’t put our foot on the problem. People were sitting in the pews and not doing anything. They would come and sit and leave. And we began to ask if this is the Gospel.”
Crestview was known for its amazing stage productions, heartfelt contemporary worship, and relevant sermon topics often based on current events and pop culture. It quickly grew in numbers—adding two satellite “video campuses” and a recently launched online church campus—and was cited as one of the fastest growing churches in the nation. “Having someone validate what we were doing like that was really cool at first. We were really good at creating the ‘Wow’ factor that would have them wanting more,” Hiam says in reflection. “But I would go home exhausted and consistently wonder what difference we were making. I didn’t like that. And I just reached a point where I couldn’t do it anymore.”
In what many would consider a stunning move for a 8,000-member mega-church, Hiam and the board of elders chose to sell their recently developed $12 million dollar campus to a local technology company, which is now planning to convert the sanctuary into a manufacturing facility. “Selling the building was easier than we thought,” one elder stated.
So what made this ultra-successful pastor of one of the city’s largest suburban communities take such a radical step? Hiam shared that it was faith. “One day I walked into the main sanctuary, and it was empty. It was this huge building that we were paying a mortgage on and it was dark. I just had this sense of wonder if this is really what Jesus would do. Would he have created this building? And then when the economy took a downturn, paying the mortgage became our primary concern. But everyone was hurting. We had to let people go from their jobs. All of a sudden paying the bills became our primary motivation.”
Hiam shared that his messages became motivated by how much those people could give to the church rather than the Gospel. And then a moment of clarity hit me. “I was standing there on a Sunday and, right in the middle of my sermon, I just stopped. I looked around and just realized that, if we let go of this burden, everything would change. It was at that time I started to really question our intentions. At the same time, some really good people asked if we were living ‘missionally.’ Were we really releasing people to minister to their neighbor? I didn’t have a good answer to that question.”
Hiam began to doubt his own faith and purpose. “It was a dark time. More than once I told my wife I wanted to quit and go back to business,” Hiam said. “I felt like I was losing my soul. But the board of elders stuck with me, and they began to ask how we could begin to use money to solve real needs when we saw them. We suddenly realized we had the power to release people to be ‘missional.’”
Hiam wrestled with the decision over a six-month period. He knew that letting go of the building meant doing things in a completely different way. “The show would be gone, and, in some ways, that was hard for my ego to let go. It essentially meant trusting God to work in the people and not being everything to everybody. It was like we had new glasses on. We quickly realized that, before, a small majority of people were doing almost everything. They were burned out and completely exhausted. Now everyone has responsibility and purpose. So many people came to me, thanking me,” Hiam said.
When the building was sold, many felt lost in the transition. “We immediately lost about 30% of the people who attended our church,” Hiam shared. That number roughly translates to almost a thousand people. “Everyone called me and told me they just wanted a place to go on Sunday. They didn’t want to go out into the world. People’s primary concern was the loss of our children’s program.”
In talking with several families that had left, one woman expressed what has become a common refrain of ex-Crestview members, “Who will teach our children about Jesus? We just felt we needed a good children’s program and didn’t want to lose that.”
Life for Hiam and the church is now more complex but, he says, more rewarding. To accommodate the lack of facilities, Hiam took the radical step and converted his basement into an administration center. “We slimmed down everything and focused on following Jesus into mission. We asked what it would mean to love God and our neighbor as ourselves. We now meet once a month for a large gathering and meal, and put all of our focus on meeting in homes. It meant really getting serious about discipleship and putting our trust into the hands of our gifted leaders.”
Once a regular speaker at evangelical conferences on topics such as leadership and church growth, Hiam says the invitations to speak have all but dried up. The shift has allowed Hiam to focus almost exclusively on meeting with leaders. He now meets almost daily with those who run discipleship groups in their homes. One leader, Bill Jarvis, liked the transition, “For the first time, I feel like I am understanding what Jesus meant when he said, ‘Go and make disciples.’ And I like it.”
The lack of mortgage has allowed the church community to give almost 80% of their tithe away. “We’re now seeing people take initiative where they wouldn’t before. We’ve empowered them to be Jesus right where they’re at. And they like it. One part of the community is using their money to help single mothers get through college. Another group has renovated an old warehouse and turned it into a community art complex. A third group builds fresh water wells for third world countries almost every month.”
Hiam is now more aware of his impact on the community and can’t imagine going back. “Someone just yesterday came up to me and said, ‘I don’t have to drive to the church to feel like a Christian anymore. I just have to go out my front door.’ That right there told me we made the right decision.”
This is a work of satire (meaning fake). We hope it causes some reflection and sparks some good discussion about how we steward the church in the midst of this economic crisis.

i think that guy rille knows what hez doing .i think alot of the pasters of all these big curches need to think about what theyre doing and not make the building the reson why people goto that curch
i probably would not have been wise enough todo what that guy did
This guy figured out that changing peoples lives was more important than how many people came.
Robert Killion
Most people think bigger is better but it depends on how good it is< you know. Like if they came out with a PS4 you would want it to be better and faster, bit with this guy he makes a great thang with what he had. "The most comes from the heart and not from the mouth" as my friend would always say. That means alot to alot of people who follow God and have hope he will return.
But now people are looking for bigger and better, but old school is the best way, going to someones basement and haveing a church meeting. No one will do that now, because we have all these big churches but some are just getting bigger and not going any where.
God is always with us even if we don't go to church and all we do is pray in our rooms, he still wants to work in iur lives.
The man that I think that always thinks about God and has the best attitude about God is Andrew Kyle, hes one of my good friends and hes the person that we all should look up to him. I could never be like him. (sorry andrew just had to use you haha)
but rapping this all up, people don't like what they have they keep increaseing in needs but all we need in our lives is God.
yes Robert right on man!!!!!!!!! Crap i didn't even say that haha o well
"Have hope in your heart and mind, leave your mouth out of it"
when is this due?
this guy had one of the fasteast growing churches in the nation and then one day he thought about just selling it i dont get it i dont think i would have been able to do that if i had a huge church like that even if he did think about it for 6 months i just dont get why he would make a dicision like that
i get wut other people r saying but i think that if they r doing all that stuff with the church than the people would be getting something out of it i guess i would of had to chek the church out myself to know for a fact
so i agree with robert but you cant change peoples lives if there is no ones life to change because no one is there
gosh that was a lot to read
Wow Matt, what you say...its wise. good job buddy! No really matt does make an awesome point.
I think rille is a very good preacher. People think that other things (idols) are better than God. They think the bigger, the better. I will agree with this sometimes, but I will know that it is wrong. Most of the time the Holy Spirit will stop me from doing these things, but still evvery now and then it can be very tempting.
I agree with matt because people think that the bigger the better
hi anyone here?
i love how evryone goes and crys and show omoteion but they go back being the old self again
hey whats up MY PEPS! lol ah that was not funny
i think the pastor was smart on stopping the building
i agree with zack bross
i think that guy was doing all that stuff to help the churc and make it grow, he sold his church to help cuz he thought thats wat god wanted.HE than went to their houses and changed alot of people into better christians we should do that more. hesold the church for god and to help it growbut i droped. That guy was a very brave guy to make that much sacfice for his church. I agree with matt alot like guys are age are looking for the nest good big toy. Like the new game that just came out call of duty world at war i mean everybody wants that game. But that guy did it fro his heart not from the mouth i like how matt said all that. Matt u have become a better christian than last year man i am proud of u.
I think that he is right when he sold it because people just come and sit down then leave. Is that really church? no , church is when you come repent to God, worship him, and give offerings to him(usually money, such as tithing) congregate with other Christians, then go home and ponder over the sermon given and grow closer to God, he was right in selling the church because they just came to listen to his sermon and go home. They didn't want to go to a small church, they wanted to go to a famous giant Churh and get on Tv. (the ones that left instead of the children's ministry thing) The ones that staye were faithful and didn't leave the church in the dust because they no longer had a child's service or because they were no longer going to be able to go into the mega church, the children's services could be easily remade and the tithe going to better more important things than mega building bills is a HUGE deal. That's more christian than taking 80% of the tithe money and giving it to tax's. These people really had problems when they were in the mega church .. tax's the primary one. everyone has problems but its wrong to give the money meant for good to tax collectors... just have a tax / money expenses donations thing and your not wasting tithes. He had his heart in the right place to do that. The real question is Would you do that? Many would say no but that's just human, its natural to want fame and to look better than others but I think i would eventually have to do what he did, because taxes and morgages would catch up and once morgages were gone (which could take a VERY long time, how much good have you done in the world? that much times worth fewer. By giving up the church they shed the morgage and tae prices, and started using that money for God. They made the right choice. At first i might be mad at their decision if i were there but i would be happy they did it when i saw how much more joy peace and love of God they were spreading than we would at the mega church.
1st question-- I think its very interesting and totally unreal.
i think that the pastor made the right descision on selling the church. since the churchs morgage became more important than worshiping God i think that he made the right choice.
Thanks tyler, im still kind of and get in some bad stuff you know but yes i have.
I have to agree with matt because he is right bigger seems better but is it? sin as bigger is far worse. but righteousness as bigger is better , it depends on what when and if it is for godly purposes or just to get people to look at you and say hey that guy is cool. now vuying a large soda at McDonalds is better priced yes but that is not what i am meaning to imply. The bigger the holiness the better. the bigger sin is in the world makes it worse. look at it like that snd it can change your whole view of the world.
Enjoy Thanksgiving next week
i agree with matt. ithink he is totally right about the bigger the better.
in my last comment i put vuying.. it should be buying
Also Tyler is right .. that guy did it all to make his church grow at first and make people want more
nah tyler's never right! haha jk tyler man
i probaly wouldnt have been brave enough to do that
when you are a very passionate paster, you favorite work/play thing is your church building. i think he has the right idea
robert, way to be boy!!!
2---i agree with Bandy
I think that in our faith one thing that makes us apathetic and hurts our relationship with God is comfort. We are just too uncomfortable! I hearing testimonies like this because it is them realizing that comfort means absolutely nothing if the people are not growing closer to God. I think that is why at chapel today everyone had such good worship time. Everyone went out of there comfort zone and didnt care what there friends thought about them cause they felt God calling them to him.I totally think that this guy really gets what the bible says about taking up your cross and following him. He left all on the table for God and God did the rest.
I agree that there was some consequences to what he did but following what God says is not always going to be a walk in the park. satan will try to stop us. I think that the lesson in this is that we need to stop huddling out in our little comfy "christian" lives and get out of our comfort zone!
i think that the pastor make a very good choice, and also made it for everyone in his church. i would probably be mad at first, hen realize how lucky i got.
i agree with B.B.
i think it was an okay decision i probablly would have responed the same
This ude definitely knew what he was doing
I meant we are just to comftorable guys sorry bout that!
i pretty much agree with robert
Your such a tease!
his guy konows whst is going on he rilly thought that changing peopoles lives was was important he made the decision becuz he thought what r they comin for n i agree with him fully
i agree with justin
i dont think i could have done what he did i would have felt guilty for the rest of my life
I think that the pastor made the right choice selling the building. A church shouldn't have to let people's jobs go. That's just sad when a staff member who's been working there for a long time is forced to be fired.
I think that the guy did have a hard decision to make with the church. I also think he made the right decision too. Because he thought of what Jesus would do not just himself.
i think that pastor made the right choice...it would have been a tough choice for me but its still the right one....most people would think that the bigger the church the better but really it depends on how much the people that go to the church are getting out of the sermons
i agree with bandy
i agree with matt
I disagree with zach hedlund because how would you feel guilty? You did it for YOUR church. You have to stand by it, through thick and thin, and by it no matter what the circumstances. If you know you did the right thing, what's there to fret about?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!
I agree with Sam W because hes right thats not what church is about. And you need to comprehend what is said. But if theres nothing said you can't.
i agree with Chad T.
i think the dude knows exacly what he is doing.
i am not a courageous as the guy..i think we should keep giving tithe and follow Christ
i agree with robert k.
Let's put 2 things on a scale. You could have a massive, modern, and growing church comfortable for about 8,000 people. Or you could provide care and nourishment for over half the world's population (About 3.5-4 billion poor souls) just from the bill on the mortgage on your massive church.
Did you know that water is readily available for over 80% of the world's countries, yet up to half the globe's population must live w/out clean drinking water? That amazes me. It is something we take for granted ALL THE TIME. We don't even realize how much we drink water. We have water fountains at our school, bottled water sold virtually everywhere, water from our fridges, and water from our faucets and sinks.
We, the privileged society, have all this, and over half the world's population simply wishes for just one of these many things. With the money no longer being used for the payment of your fancy nancy church you are now providing for those without provision.
O yeah, and we totally spanked the homeschoolers at B-Ball (It was a 50-21 BLOWOUT!!!!!!) ppppppppeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaacccccccccccceeeeeeeeee oooooooouuuuuuuuuttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good job b ball team!!! sorry i couldnt play
T-$ I totally agree with you 100%!!! You were right on the money (pun intended)
this paster knows what he's doin
this is a first, but i agree with Matt
ice ice baby??? wow austin nice hood name haha
i agree with T-$
i think that it is retarted that the guy sold his huge church. but he has a point that if thats what it takes to get people more focused on God then do it!!!
you will get all the chicks with that haha
hi matt
whats up cody!
That history test was a killer! I totally flunked!!
that guy made a really risky choice by doing that, but it ended up paying off
brandon b, you're right
Danielle threw me off, she kept banging her head on the wall haha
dude cody what do you think of thenew kid zach?(I think hes pretty cool)
I think he made the right choice selling the church, i mean you dont need a massive church that has lots of stuff to have a good church, the point is that you are getting the message of God spread.
i think matt is totally right. Way to preach it matt!
hey ok wow this was a very long blog but it really got a point across. like our bible verse said one time
"let any 1 who wishes to follow me deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. but whosoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life 4 me will find it" reference not remembered at all srry
my point is that this follower of god who had a real blessing of having the FASTEST growwing church decides to drop it all and to change the way his congrigation ministered to people and by doing this he also had a consequence of losing ithink it was 20%!!!! of his congregation. however this did pay off soon enough b/c the church didn't have a mortgage payment they could use that money to bless others like the well building in third world countries this is much like our schools guluwalk. this is alkso showing how much god can give .... as well as take away. this man shows how important it is to trust god , yes god will bless you but don't drop out of your daily/lifelong walk with god. let god rain down his majesty and glory in you life and do not conform to sin b/c it IS NOT the answer and god will judge you 4 that so even if its a "small white lie" repent ask 4 forgiveness.
thanks helbig
i think that the pastor is doin it right becauase its not about the look its about the worth of the stuff inside everything is not the progress of the church it is the meaning that church is there
hey matt u there?
hey chuck!
i think that this guy made a good decision because he was showing the people of his church that the building wasnt the main concern and that it was about helping others and following God. and he also showed that he was devoted to his church by converting his basement to help the church
i agree wit bbandy boy over there right on dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey wazzup! ya chuck norrise can speak brail . : >: + lol!
ya im srry justin b. but i dont agree that this guy is stupid b/c he trusted in god to carry him through it and to use him to minister to others
i think it was a very beneficial decision for the people but the paster lost money stopping the building so thats a very nice thing he did.
and matt cant agree with you any more!

hahahahahah i put so many blogs up hahah
I honestly don't know what to say on this one. Here's what I'm thinking though. In our extremely materialistic and complacent culture I believe that selling that building was a good choice to make. Look at it this way: Does the building make the church or do the people make the church? When you look at it that way, the solution is easy, sell the building and 'go and make disciples' not sitting in your comfortable multi-million mega-church. I totally think that guy nailed it when he decided that God didn't really have any particular use for that building.
P.S. Guess who dominated the basketball game. Oh yeah, EAGLES!!
luke im your sister!!!!!!!!!!
whos darth vader? and thank you mr reed for letting me lead the class today kind of
i think it was awesome! it would be so hard to give up everything youve put in to the church and just sell it. he had this huge awesome church, but because it wasnt really church, just more of a bunch of people coming and going, he sold it and now has church in homes! thats when you know that you are trusting God with everything.
im gonna use my awesome name this time!! but anyway i agree with T-$. sometimes were just too comfortable and its good to get out of that comfort zone and change something.
I totally agree with what this guy did. He asked questions that a lot of people would have benn afraid to answer. Are you really making an impact? Have you lost your original purpose? If so, what do I do to make it right? This guy knew what had to be done and he did it. More people need to be willing to stand up and take action aginst something that is losing its purpose.
Matt, I am gonna comment on your blog. I am extremly flattered about what you said about me.You are a completly changed person from last year. I hope that I can be a role Model for you in the years to come.
Hello??????????????????? Is anybody there this morning. It is 6in the morning. GET UP YOU SLACKERS!
i agree wat this guy was doing, no one was rely getting wat God had to say and they left church just because they thought if they just went to church they go to heaven and r good people.this guy did the right thing with the economy and how ppl were ating at the church. this guy did the right thing in a tough situation.
I think that money should not be the main focus in the church. At all.
I gotta agree with Robert. Pure genius my friend
Guess how hot I am on a scale of one to ten? 8,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000!
i think that the guy new wat he was doin. i wouldnt b able 2 do that.
i agree with Robert about wat he said about changing peeps lives is mor importatn than havin mor peeps cum 2 ur church
THIS IS SUCH A DEBATEABLE THING. I THINK THESE MEAGA CHURCHES SOMETIMES LOSE THE REASON THEY STARTED THE CHURCH IN THE FIRST PLACE, I THINK THIS PASTOR IS RIGHT ON TRACK THOUGH THIS IS A AMAZING TESTIMONY.
RIGHT O MATT I THINK MATT IS ALWAYS THE BEST AT THIS AND WAS RIGH TO, GO MATT.
i think that his desicion was risky but wise i like how he actually new what going to church was relly abought. church is like christmas most people think its just abought getting and giving to stuff to eachother but its not its abought celebrating jesus christs birth and how awusem he is wich brings us back to church we are suppost to worship the lord and learn abought him tso we can share the gosple and point people to christ but people usualy just go there for the stuff and its part of their routine.
the guy saved peoples lives by talking and spreading the word of god.
i think that the speaker was a good understanding person. sometimes you just want to give up but you should never turn on god he is always the one thing you need to have with him anythings possible.
yah i think the paster dude is really good and nows what hes talking about hes really intresting
i believe in God, bc of my faith. none of us have seen Him, but with are faith we can belive. its all about faith and believing! He is the only way to heaven
good job b bandy
goofball i mean this buy totally was oblivious to his foundation that he was sitting on
i think autum was realy a good help and i think also it was a little harder to ask a girl questions than a guy cuz it would be more helpful hearing it u know from a girl oh i should say woman lol wow that was bad but anyway ithought it helped us and was good. and hey sorry lately i havent posted any blogs this goes out to every body in Mr.reeds class that u did your share and i should have done mine any way ill keep posting im in mrs. scholes class and it stinks and ill check u later peace!
i mean it felt good hearing it from a woman u know what im saying so ya like it was more accurate and we could ask her stuff that guys realy cant answer like why do thy weare make up and how should ask out a girl u fell me idk i think we could be open and asking alot of questions and stuff i want to thank mr. reed and autumn for aserwing our questions any comments on what isade or talk to write k seya!!!!
