Interesting Statistics

Read this article first:
HARTFORD, Conn. - The Catholic population of the United States has shifted away from the Northeast and towards the Southwest, while secularity continues to grow in strength in all regions of the country, according to a new study conducted by the Program on Public Values at Trinity College. "The decline of Catholicism in the Northeast is nothing short of stunning," said Barry Kosmin, a principal investigator for the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS). "Thanks to immigration and natural increase among Latinos, California now has a higher proportion of Catholics than New England."
Conducted between February and November of last year, ARIS 2008 is the third in a landmark series of large, nationally representative surveys of U.S. adults in the 48 contiguous states conducted by Kosmin and Ariela Keysar. Employing the same research methodology as the 1990 and 2001 surveys, ARIS 2008 questioned 54,461 adults in either English or Spanish. With a margin of error of less than 0.5 percent, it provides the only complete portrait of how contemporary Americans identify themselves religiously, and how that self-identification has changed over the past generation.
In broad terms, ARIS 2008 found a consolidation and strengthening of shifts signaled in the 2001 survey. The percentage of Americans claiming no religion, which jumped from 8.2 in 1990 to 14.2 in 2001, has now increased to 15 percent. Given the estimated growth of the American adult population since the last census from 207 million to 228 million, that reflects an additional 4.7 million "Nones." Northern New England has now taken over from the Pacific Northwest as the least religious section of the country, with Vermont, at 34 percent "Nones," leading all other states by a full 9 points.
"Many people thought our 2001 finding was an anomaly," Keysar said. We now know it wasn't. The 'Nones' are the only group to have grown in every state of the Union."
The percentage of Christians in America, which declined in the 1990s from 86.2 percent to 76.7 percent, has now edged down to 76 percent. Ninety percent of the decline comes from the non-Catholic segment of the Christian population, largely from the mainline denominations, including Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians/Anglicans, and the United Church of Christ. These groups, whose proportion of the American population shrank from 18.7 percent in 1990 to 17.2 percent in 2001, all experienced sharp numerical declines this decade and now constitute just 12.9 percent.

Most of the growth in the Christian population occurred among those who would identify only as "Christian," "Evangelical/Born Again," or "non-denominational Christian." The last of these, associated with the growth of megachurches, has increased from less than 200,000 in 1990 to 2.5 million in 2001 to over 8 million today. These groups grew from 5 percent of the population in 1990 to 8.5 percent in 2001 to 11.8 percent in 2008. Significantly, 38.6 percent of mainline Protestants now also identify themselves as evangelical or born again.

"It looks like the two-party system of American Protestantism--mainline versus evangelical--is collapsing," said Mark Silk, director of the Public Values Program. "A generic form of evangelicalism is emerging as the normative form of non-Catholic Christianity in the United State s."

Other key findings:

Baptists, who constitute the largest non-Catholic Christian tradition, have increased their numbers by two million since 2001, but continue to decline as a proportion of the population.

After Reading this article. What is your first initial reaction to this? How do we as Christians respond to the stats that were presented? Will this continue to affect the Church over the next 20 years? Why are people becoming "non-religious"?

I FEEL LIKE WE ARE NOT DOING A GOOD JOB IN THE COMMUNITY... IT WAS LIKE THE STORY THE MAN PREACHED ABOUT IN CHAPEL... IF WE ARENT GONA BE LIKE CHRIST THAN HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO EXPECT OTHERS TO FOLLOW CHRIST. WE MUST RESPOND BY TREATING EVERYONE WITH A CHRIST-LIKE ATTITUDE AND JUST BECAUSE THEY MIGTHT NOT HAVE THE SAME RELIGION OR THEIR ANOYYING DON'T MEAN U GOTTA BE CRITICAL... U CAN STILL LISTEN AND LOVE JUST DONT BE JERKISH TOWARDS THEM. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS GONNA EFFECT THE CHURCH CRITICALLY OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS ... I MEAN WHY WOULD'NT IT EFFECT IT!!! THESE PEOPLE ARE BEING JERKS AND NOT ACTING LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED 2! I THINK THAT THESE PEOPLE SEE ARE RELIGION AND THINK O WELL WHY WOULD I WANT TO CHANGE INTO ONE OF THEM PEOPLE ALL THEY ACT LIKE IS JERKS TOWARDS US JUST BECAUSE WE AREN'T RELIGIOUS!

I definately agree with drew. People who r looking for fulfilment dont c it in christians because all we do is talk down to people and act like we r perfect and they r horribles sinners. Jesus wasn't like that. He was kind and loving to evry1 no matter wat religion they were. I think in20 yrs it will b the same as it is now or worse if us christians dont start loving people and show them how we r SUPPOSED to be.

Like I said back in Bible, our numbers are declining because we have no passion to spread the Word of God. If you wanted to become a Christian back in biblical times, you ran a risk of being persecuted, tortured, or even killed. You knew the sacrifice you were about to make to become a child of God.
Nowadays, you dont get killed or tortured for spreading for gospel because we are protected under the freedom of religion in our country's constitution. That being said it should be easier for us to spread the Gospel, and more people willing to try. But because we are so safe, we have become even too comfortable to make the meager effort of preaching about our Maker.
In our journaling about idols, I said that people try to fill that emptiness in their hearts with stuff because they think it will make them happy. What they really need is a God to content them. People want to listen to what the Church has to say, but there is no one to listen to. And the longer we procrastinate, as we have become accustomed to doing (Spencer!), the more people we will miss the opportunity to preach to!
The mindset of christians has become "Let everyone else do the work, God can't use me...". Wrong? God can use you, and we, as a body of believers, can change the world, one person at a time.

this article shows how poorly we are doing as christian in the bible it says to preach the gospel all over the earth. we need to follow this by starting in are neighborhoods and communities. i believe if we have faith we can stop this from afecting america in 20 years. i think i we dont do this america will be changed critacly.

We should not be so critical of other religions, but we can still try to convert them without being rude or critical. Even if they dont want to accept our religion, we should let God deal with that. We could just say ok and walk away or u could still be friends with them.

My first initial response is not surprised. We have been learning about how to be men and reject passivity and accept resonsibility. This means to go and take the responsibility to go share the gospel. If Christians don't man up then this will continue to affect us in the next 20 years! Christians are becoming too apathetic. We need to share the gospel that appeals to people which is what the gospel is... appealing! in other words men.... MAN UP AND SHARE THE GOPEL!!!!!!!!!!!

I think we need to preach the gospel instead of doing what we want because God wants us Christians to share the gospel. Others need Jesus because they have gone through a lot of trouble in their lives. We need to set a Christ like example to them because if we do not show that example how are they gonna want to be a Christian. We need to show Jesus in us and love everyone.

i really agree with drew on this one i think we should really stop thinking about anything else and just preach the word i think it is useless if we as Christians preach the word and tell everyone do do what it says and we ourselves dont read it do it or even sometimes dont even take it into our consideration. i know that not all of us are gonna be the "perfect Christian" as many think of us today but we should at least try to be more Godly every day. like it says in 2 peter 1:4 “Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”-
in this it says that we are gonna mess up but God has given us promises so that we can have hope and something to give us an incentive to be more godly every day

i feel that these statistics are defiantly true, unfortunately, and that we missions exist because worship doesn't and that unless we as Christian's reach out to help the non-believers to listen to Christ. unless we do this, unfortunately our population in the church will continue to decrease because other religions offer things and promises to the Christian and when they see that the church isn't moving they go to follow other's that aren't Christian to find out if they are moving into something.

First thought to go across my mind while reading these statistics: Not surprised. I'm honestly not surprised by these statistics. I know the world is in a bad place. In America even more so. We need to start first with surrendering our own lives to God. Give him everything, not just some sector of your life. After this, we need to evangelize thorough love. Love should be our main component throughout our entire lives. Without love, people just won't get it. They'll think that we are jerks. And that's just what we are when we don't have God and his love in our hearts. If we don't take some action, this will continue to affect the church. They see most Christians as jerks because we don't keep God's love at the front of our hearts when we witness. Otherwise, it is meaningless.

Austin is exactly right. We do not need to be cynical about believers.

Christians can degrade other people, which all that does is cause more criticism.

i feel like were doing a very good job letting every type of religion and race into the country with free wrights in everything and not looking down on them for what they look like or how they worship God.

i agree with drew.

we are not spreading the word very well, and i just think we need to do a better job of that

I think that sometimes the church uses physical things to attract people and they go there just for that. They get all caught up in it and don't get to learn and focus on God.

i agree with drew and the comment with Rickie after that.

I think we should not only have missionaries to go to other coutries, but have some people that go aroung teaching the gospel in the united states. Most people in the u.s.a say they are christians but really arent. We should read the bible every day to get more knowledge on God, so that we can preach about God to the best of our ability. i believe that one man can change every thing and that we should do our best to stay strong in God.

I agree with drew, but not only do i agree with him, but i am a problem in that situation. sometimes it is hard to act more like God because the crowd isnt. my only thing to say is to try your best and God will respect it.

i'm also not surprised that religion in general is decreasing. but it is good that the number of evangelical people and churches are increaasing. i mean to go from 200,000 in 1990 to over 8 million in 2008 is incredble. i just hope that it will contine to incerease. but the problem is that even if evangelicalism increases there is still the problem that all the other denominations are decreasing at a fast pace. only God can control what is going to happen next

how is it going

i agree 100% with my boi T-Money

I agree with Drew
We need to step up to the plate and take charge and not let other religions lead God's people away from Him. If we don't witness or even act like Christ thenhow arewe to expect people to follow Christ.

We also need to watch out for the split in the churches or denominations. We need to just agree on the basic stuff, vidal to salvation and creation, etc. so we can unite and not fight. Some people see the conflic in churches and don't want to jion because of all the fighting. If we united we could over power all the opsticles that come in the "church of Christ's" way like money, other religions and we could lift our selves up and not put other denominations down.

My first reaction to it is that people who were never really christian are no longer going around telling everybody that they are. I think that we should respond to it, by peaching the gospel to everybody who says there a christian but doesn't act like it, and teh people who don't say they are christians. I think that this will go on as long as there are people who say that they are christians, but don't act like it. I really think people are becoming non religious because they don't like how christians are hyprocrits.

Anonymous said...

Drew you really nailed it.

i think that the decrease in religion is not going well. and it hasn't even gotten any better. if it continues to decrease at this rate, religion could possibly be banned in the united states. the one good thing coming out of this is that there is an increase in evangelicalism. but if religion in general is decreasing there will only be like 50% of people with religion. i just hope that God will help this situation.

i definitely agree with spencer cole. he is totally right. way to beast it spencer!

I disagree with Rickie ross (second comment top of page). The Christian population may have decreased, but that doesn't nessassarily mean we are failing as Christians and spreading the Gospel. I'm not saying we are being the perfect Christians God called us to be, I'm saying, instead, there are many factors besides our attitude and efforts that lead to the Christian population decreasing (ex: finantial issues).

i think that it could be a good thing that more churches are becoming non-denominational, b/c it could help 2 unify all the churches, instead of having all the churches argue over what beliefs are right.

The Christian population in the U.S. is dropping. So what? Well for starter that means something along the lines is going wrong - whether it's meeting a Christian that was a bad influence or just having a personal dislike of religion. I don't think all of the problem is Christians in general. I help with my church's kid's choir. When one of the kids who is a trouble maker doesn't come, the whole room is quiet and peaceful. When the kid returns, the room is filled with shouting, screaming, and yelling. That one kid gives the class a bad name. This can be the same with Christianity too. One so called "Christian" who is a bad example can prevent others believing. We should watch how we treat others and watch how our general attitude is to make sure WE aren't the person. Also watch other people who call themselves Christians and prevent them from being a bad influence.

Doesn't anyone disagree with drew? 20 YEARS IS A LONG WAY FROM NOW. PEOPLE CAN CHANGE. What I got out of Drew May's comment was that Christians act like jerks and don't love and care for the community. Just because we disagree with other religions like Muslim and Hindu doesn't mean we're acting, "Jerkish". Have you met a person who says, "all Christians are jerks, not one has been kind. I hate Christians,"? Tell me, walk up to a person and ask, "What do you think of Christians?" Sure they may say something negative, but show them what being a Christian means. Share the Gospel to the world.

Anonymous said...

my initial reaction is that my heart is broken. Many Christians are becoming a non-religious. we have to respond that we must be prepared in God. Our faith must be stronger than the world, so no one become a non-religious. i think this will not coutinue, because God is stronger than the world. i think people are becoming non-religious, because they are having a hard time, and their faith is not that strong. when the economy is falling people might say there's no God just because they are having a hard time.

What i think is that people are being jerks, rying act cool, and all that junk that no one cares about. NO ONE wants to sit around and here people insult them with "your mom is so fat....." or you say something and they say "your mom" ack to you PEOPLE MAY THINK ITS FUNNY.... say that to your boss at work you probably would get fired for you if it was a real job.Really i mean come on guys look. girls dont like it, your boss'es in your furture wont accept back talk, it gets you NOWHERE atleast give it up as Mr. Najjar says, a habbit is too weak to be noticed until it is too strong to be broke... dont let it take over you, quit it, and live normally, not the way everyone else THINK normal is.

Samuel W said...

that was supposed to be trying up at the top

Samuel W said...

Also, i again state that people would get NO WHERE with this attitude and in 20 years, more people would be driven away and that could cause a cascading effect of people turning away because of what those people say about us. , I agree with Drew may because he is absolutely right when he says we are not doing good in the community but i also agree with the person who said he is wrong, he is both wrong AND right. we need to act better and in 20 years if we act like that we will just go downhill. BUT we could ALSO in those 20 years look at the statistics and change and thus go uphill.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with drew.....us Christians act like we r all better than everyone else but we win too and when we act like that it makes the nonbelievers think y would I wanna be a Christian when I am greeted badly by Christians.....we don't set a good example of what living a Christ like life really is
